December 30th, 2024 - In the spirit of Tautua, the Samoan word for service, Rotary Club of Pago Pago has embarked on a remarkable journey through 2024, marked by impactful projects, community-building events, and the induction of new members. This year has been a testament to the unwavering commitment of Rotarians in American Samoa to enhancing lives and fostering a spirit of Tautua across our islands.
Celebrating New Inductions
We are thrilled to welcome new members into the family: Kelley, Vili, Dorian and Archie. These passionate individuals have joined us, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our mission of service. Equally exciting was the club's annual changeover when the new Board of Directors was appointed; including President Moeroa Hardman. Their induction signifies not just the growth of our club, but also the deepening of our commitment to Tautua.
Discussing her favorite Rotary activities of 2024, Kelley Anderson Tagarino said, "Getting to see Rotaract of ASCC enjoying the Parents of Children with Special Needs Network party with my kids was a joyful occasion."
Kelley also reminisced, "Seeing mini-Agnes run the Rotaract induction was heartwarming - she inspired her members to put service above self." Kelley was referring to incoming Rotaract of ASCC President Athena Polu; daughter of former-RCPP President Agnes Polu.
Peter Crispin also noted, “Let's keep things going. I would like to acknowledge Joe Weilenman's 90th birthday this past year which should be celebrated. He has done so much for the club over many many years.”
Launch of the Rotaract Club of ASCC
A significant milestone this year is the launch of the new Rotaract Club of the American Samoa Community College (ASCC). This club, made up of enthusiastic young leaders, is already making waves with their dedication to community service and leadership. Their projects, ranging from environmental clean-ups to educational programs, embody the true essence of Tautua.
Key Projects of 2024
Read Aloud Program
Our Read Aloud Program, in partnership with the American Samoa Department of Education’s Early Childhood Education Division, continues to thrive. Rotarians volunteer to read to young children, fostering a love of reading and learning at an early age. This year, we distributed over 350 books, reinforcing our commitment to education.
Dictionary Program
Touching the lives of third-grade students across American Samoa, our Dictionary Program saw the distribution of 1,200 dictionaries this year. This initiative ensures that every child has the tools they need to succeed academically, highlighting our dedication to literacy and education.
Four-Way Test Awards
Recognizing high school students who exemplify Rotary’s values, the Four-Way Test Awards will never cease to inspire. This year, we honored 25 deserving students with cash awards and commendation letters, encouraging them to continue their journey of integrity and service.
Angel Rings Safety Initiative
To enhance swimmer safety, we have expanded our Angel Rings initiative, placing additional flotation devices at popular beaches. This project is a lifeline for our community, helping to prevent drownings and promoting a safe environment for all.
Youth Engagement
Our commitment to youth engagement culminated in the establishment of several new Interact and Rotaract clubs. These young leaders participated in numerous projects, including providing new hygeine supply cabinets for high school students and organizing holiday parties for the special needs community. Their hard work and passion reinforce the values of Tautua they will carry forward.
Looking Forward
As we reflect on the accomplishments of 2024, we are reminded of the power of Tautua. It is through service that we build stronger communities, inspire future leaders, and create lasting change. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and look forward to continuing our mission of Tautua in the years to come.
The first major project of 2025 will be the Annual Rotary Club of Pago Pago Golf Tournament which is scheduled for Saturday February 22nd at the Ili'ili Golf Course. This is the club's largest annual fundraising event with 100% of proceeds going to fund club projects. If you would like to serve as a Rotarian, reach out and let's do something awesome together!
