Thursday 19th October 2023 - The Rotary Club of Pago Pago is readying for its annual dictionary distribution. For the last two decades, the club has provided a free hard bound dictionary to every 3rd Grade student in American Samoa. In preparation, several of the club met to unbox and apply a Rotary label to the inside cover of each book; explaining from where it came and to whom it was presented.
Rotary Club of Pago Pago President Cherith Soliai submits this report:
We gathered at Tool Shop in Tafuna at exactly 5 o' clock. Peter C., Danielle, Natalia, Cherith, Andrew, Gun, Debbs and Barry started off the dictionary labeling with some Samoan hit musika (music). Everything was paced with the musika. More Rotarians like Margie, Tiara, Justin and Rotaractor Albert turned up later to help finish off the labeling which was completed in 45 minutes.
Only 700 books were labeled this year to combine with 200 leftovers from last year so it was a quick service affair. As some of the Rotarians departed from the Tool Shop grounds, Tom was running in with a case of Vailima Extra Strong. He represents Quality Control so for sure that was a long service affair.
Within the next month, teams of Rotarians will deploy to elementary schools to present the dictionaries to every 3rd grader in American Samoa. This is both a fun learning opportunity for the students and a wonderful public relations opportunity for the Rotary Club to spread the spirit of Service Above Self.
Rotary Club's community service efforts are funded by club members and community fundraising. You can participate in projects like this one by donating or volunteering.
